Love in the time of pandemic

Love in the time of pandemic

Hi! I’ve been away from my blog involved with my other projects and then the pandemic hit… standstill…

I’m curious how many of you have had this pandemic change your relationship- couples, marriages, dating. Have your family and friends been supportive or the opposite? Many people have had to physically separate and distance because of the virus. Some chose not to expose their loved ones due to the job and risk they have. Distance is difficult and in a pandemic its even harder. Has the time apart changed things? Does the old adage “absence makes the heart grow fonder” hold true today? Are those around you fostering growth or planting doubt?

Are they giving you unsolicited advice about relationships with good intentions? How does this influence you?

Maybe you quarantined away from your significant other? Since you’ve been with family and friends how has your perspective changed? How do you see your significant other? Do you take their advice, if they didn’t like him/her and throw the relationship out the window? Are you a strong enough person to stick to your own ideas about your relationship? My belief is–be strong, calm and only you know how you truly feel. Be true to yourself in your heart and that always works best. There’s an old saying that says “if you don’t take the first bite you’ll never get the joy of the taste“.

The pandemic has taught us it is not good to be alone. Remember life is not a dress rehearsal. Don’t take your loved ones for granted.

There are three things that I do for myself everyday.  First, I always take a moment at the beginning of each day to meditate and pray. I also reflect on what I want out of my day.  My goals, my intentions and what I need to accomplish. My father always used to say that you could tell what the day was going to be like by the sunrise.  I’ll also give my mom some credit- she always said to make my bed in the morning so my day would go smoothly.   It’s funny how your childhood sayings always come back as an adult and ring true. My daughter even told me that she recalls this when she looks at her unmade bed in the mornings.  Though now my mother says, “Dr. Oz, says don’t make your bed-let the sheets air out.”

Second, I get myself together for the day.  As a hairdresser my hair has played an important role in my feelings about my appearance and life. When my hair is a mess but not dirty, my go to is dry shampoo. You shouldn’t wash your hair everyday unless you have particularly oily hair.  Shampooing a couple times a week is best for most hair types and helps the hair retain its natural oils. Dry shampoos will save you time, refresh your hair and add volume without washing.  I apply light makeup if I’m going out or staying home.  A little mascara can bring your eyes to the forefront of the world! Add a little lipstick and that’s all you need.  You never know when you will run into someone!

Third, is the most important of all. Keeping in contact with family and friends. It’s important to not let life get in the way and let our connections slip away.  I find this very therapeutic. It can be as easy as a quick phone call, a short lunch or a simple cup of coffee.  Don’t forget the ever ready social media when friends or family live far away.

Always smile, keep it positive, never let negativity get to you in this crazy mixed up world.

Today, I speak from my life experiences.  Life is not always as easy as we know. We all have our share of curve balls thrown at us but we continue on.  I put a positive vibe around me to attract good thoughts and people I want in my life.  Don’t get me wrong- I’ve had my share of takers of my time and energies.  Being the yes person I used to be.  I thought nothing of offering my talent or time to help only to be left out in the cold when I was in need emotionally.  Well there is a saying, “don’t let them take your kindness for weakness” and I found out it was true. Wow, January flew by!  That means I’ll be getting ready to celebrate the month of February. The Wear Red for Women’s Heart month and of course Valentine’s Day, which this year is also Ash Wednesday. Oh, and how can we forget Mardi Gras better known as Fat Tuesday.

Women’s Heart month is very important and we need to take a moment to address this. Get checked out! Women present with different symptoms than men. Wear red and encourage the women in your life to see their doctor!

Well, let’s get ready for Valentine’s Day and talk about your heart in different light.  Now that we have eaten all the King’s cake and gotten our ashes, it’s time to get ready for Valentine’s  What hair am I in the mood for? Curly is fun and carefree, wavy is sensual, straight is serious. Now good hydrated skin speaks volumes to everyone no matter what age you are. I like to use Bio Oil or you can use your favorite moisturizer. Don’t have one? An old go to trick is to beat egg whites only and then apply to your face for 15 minutes, rinse and you’re ready. This gives you a refreshed look and gives tired skin a restful glow. Now you’re ready to celebrate with anyone!

I have been married for decades so our Valentine’s Day consists of my love bringing a box of candy and supermarket flowers. It’s ok, simple but sweet.  I make a nice dinner of roast chicken his favorite potatoes and homemade cake with fresh fruit.  Well, grandma would say when you’re dating he’s all about the beautiful roses and when he’s got you the thorns come out. My grandmother had a lot of great sayings;  like don’t give or show too much of yourself,  leave them wanting more. I think we all want more out of life.  To make ourselves better–that’s the reason we get up in the morning.  Hopefully this will help you get ready for February! A little heart health, Lenten season and Valentine’s Day.

Always smile, keep it positive, never let negativity get to you in this crazy mixed up world.
