There are three things that I do for myself everyday. First, I always take a moment at the beginning of each day to meditate and pray. I also reflect on what I want out of my day. My goals, my intentions and what I need to accomplish. My father always used to say that you could tell what the day was going to be like by the sunrise. I’ll also give my mom some credit- she always said to make my bed in the morning so my day would go smoothly. It’s funny how your childhood sayings always come back as an adult and ring true. My daughter even told me that she recalls this when she looks at her unmade bed in the mornings. Though now my mother says, “Dr. Oz, says don’t make your bed-let the sheets air out.”
Second, I get myself together for the day. As a hairdresser my hair has played an important role in my feelings about my appearance and life. When my hair is a mess but not dirty, my go to is dry shampoo. You shouldn’t wash your hair everyday unless you have particularly oily hair. Shampooing a couple times a week is best for most hair types and helps the hair retain its natural oils. Dry shampoos will save you time, refresh your hair and add volume without washing. I apply light makeup if I’m going out or staying home. A little mascara can bring your eyes to the forefront of the world! Add a little lipstick and that’s all you need. You never know when you will run into someone!
Third, is the most important of all. Keeping in contact with family and friends. It’s important to not let life get in the way and let our connections slip away. I find this very therapeutic. It can be as easy as a quick phone call, a short lunch or a simple cup of coffee. Don’t forget the ever ready social media when friends or family live far away.
Always smile, keep it positive, never let negativity get to you in this crazy mixed up world.
